Neither rain nor mud could keep the crowds away from the Mall for the National Book Festival. It was a sea of turquoise book bags and longlonglong lines of author groupies.

Plan to get Neil Gaiman to sign "Fragile Things" evaporated despite the humidity. His line was about 500 people long when we got there and an hour later it was still 500 people long. Steven Kellogg was only signing copies of his new collaborative effort, "Our White House." But how wonderful to see the printed word and the people who make their livings writing draw so many folks out on a soggy day.
Came home hoping to tune in to some of the podcasts mentioned in previous post and found they aren't from today's sessions. But Jan Brett does talk about her poster design: Each of the animals represents one of the 50 states. She noted there are a lot of deer. Several states have whales as the state animal; she left those out, though today one could almost imagine a small whale floating down the Mall.
